While emerging markets can be viewed as the destination in which to recoup slowing demand from mature markets, engineering and architecture firms should be aware of the geographical, cultural, and regulatory differences that may impose barriers to their expansion.
  • • Engineering and architecture as a multidisciplinary domain may include structural, environmental, mechanical, and electrical engineering in one design project. A successful design project needs to rely on not only expertise in each individual discipline, but also the art and science of managing the design processes of complex systems.
  • • The increasing awareness of environmental protection and climate change issues increases the demand for more eco-friendly buildings and other constructions. These requirements may result in greater emphasis on such areas as environmental engineering, energy efficiency, use of more eco-friendly materials, reduction of carbon emissions in construction and maintenance processes, etc.
  • • From the moment customer requirements are received to the moment design deliverables are distributed to construction crews, design work has to flow internally and/or across the organization in multiple stages (e.g., survey, design, simulation, etc.). Design data and process visibility have become key elements in successfully managing today’s engineering and architecture activities.
  • • Although civil engineering has been a well-established subject major in various educational institutions for many years, a great deal of knowledge in engineering and architecture is generated, distributed, and acquired in the workplace. The use of design software helps engineers increase their individual productivity significantly, but this may also make internal knowledge sharing and transformation more chaotic due to the massive volumes of data.
Engineering and architecture firms can overcome these challenges with software solutions that focus on facilitating design collaboration and project delivery.
